Tony Waltham beschreibt den Eingang in den Alum Pot ganz begeistert als "most spectacular entrance shaft, or pothole, in Britain....it combines depth, width and spectacular viewpoints in a unique style". Mehr Lob brauchts nicht.

Eine 36 m lange und bis 12 m breite baumbewachsene Öffnung klafft in der typischen Graslandschaft an der Ostflanke des Simon Fell in Nordyorkshire, umgeben von Steinmauern, die die Schafe vor dem Absturz schützen sollen in 343 m Seehöhe. Je nachdem, wo man einsteigt, ist die Strecke bis zum Grund 49 m bzw. 73 m lang bzw. tief. 

1847 erreichte John Birkbeck das erste Mal das Schachtinnere durch eine andere Höhle, die Long Churn Cave, kam aber nicht bis zum Grund. Ein Jahr später erreichte er den Schachtgrund in einem großen Kübel, der von Eisenbahnarbeitern im Hauptschacht hinabgelassen und später wieder hochgezogen wurde. 

Der Alum Pot ist nur einer von mehreren Eingängen in das Alum-Pot-System, das heute bis auf eine Länge von 2454 m erforscht ist und eine Gesamttiefe von 129 m aufweist.
